True, it IS a bit weird for his last name to be 'Normal'...
I guess I occasionally conceived Peter as a completely 'normal' kid, and when I was thinking up last names, I was like - "Hey, what not just 'Normal'?" Sort of as a joke or...I don't know, a bit of silly commentary? A subconscious reminder that he's not a wizard, or a hero, or in any way supernaturally gifted?
But I can see it might be distracting or off-putting. What does everybody else think? Is it a bit too precious, a bit too arch? Though I have a tough time thinking of him as Peter White, or Peter Jones, or Peter Smith, or Peter Hecht, or Peter Hamilton, etc.
There was a guy named Normal on Dark Angel and that wasn't too distracting to me; so, I don't find their last name being Normal to be that big a deal. Besides, you'd have to change the whole last half of the page if you changed the name; so, unless you come up with something you like much better, I wouldn't change it if I were you.
I also like your explanation that he's "not a wizard, or a hero, or in any way supernaturally gifted". It's good to have reminders like that.
I don't find it too distracting. I admit though, that my first thought when I read it was "the author is trying to signal that the main character is a normal human being--unlike anyone else he's likely to meet."
I don't know if you want to be that transparent or not.
Still, I didn't give any serious thought to it after that.
That being said, I'm writing an online serial myself and gave my character the last name of "Klein" (which means small in German) for more or less the same reason you gave your character the name Normal.
Normal's perfectly fine. Whether it's transparent or not doesn't really matter, you're writing a story not passing it off as reality. I find that the last name Normal actually adds a quality to it, since despite his abnormal circumstances he seems to try to be more or less a normal kid. Oh, and congratulations on your growing Fanbase, guy.
PETER AND THE VAMPIRES is a horror/comedy web novel (and a free podcast!)about a normal, 10-year-old kid who moves into a sinister town filled with supernatural horribleness. The series is composed of different "monster of the week" stories - kind of like THE X-FILES crossed with THE SIMPSONS (if Mr. Burns were a ghoul and something terrifying lived in the town dump). "Peter And The Dead Men" is the first story in the collection. A new page is posted every day.

What say you, the readers?

So maybe I shouldn't talk.
