Aww! Beth copying Gwen is adorable, as is Peter's reaction to it. But: Peter's not badass? Au contraire! He's practically a superhero by this point, not to mention his psycho badass evil side. I mean, the fact that he's not afraid to stand up to Grandfather should tell Beth something.

Subtle Grandfather is subtle! Whatever his other skills, he would have made a lousy secret agent.

And oh no! It looks like Frank's been brainwashed! Wait, would that even work considering he's an artificial creation? Clearly he's just annoyed at getting wet and this is his way of asking for a tent and a space heater.

Nah, Frank's coming to protect them! And maybe tell them off because they haven't fed him for a few days... Poor Frank!

Beth doesn't know that Peter's badass, she's never seen him fighting all the evil. He obviously just doesn't have that air of baddassery, that je ne sais quoi that Gwen has. Or maybe it's just the way Gwen handles the gun.

Hmmm, has Frank been turned against them by magic? Or is he just starving? Or terrified of something out there and trying to dive into the house for safety? Or is something else attacking them (Frank, after all, does not have glowing red eyes to the best of my recollection) and Frank trying to save them? Waiting with bated breath...

On the Beth/Gwen thing - yes, it's adorable. And really, I don't think Peter's a badass, at least not like Gwen and Grandfather. He's incredibly brave, but the literary archetype he fills isn't the fearless, deadly warrior, it's the ordinary person who discovers they have the courage to do extraordinary things despite NOT having massive combat skills. If this was the Lord of the Rings, Peter and Dill would be Frodo and Sam - Gwen would probably be Aragorn or someone like that. Very different archetype.

To all -
Haha, glad you like Beth! I quite enjoyed writing that passage.

Rubberduck -
Now I agree, the Doppelganger is badass. But while Peter is courageous, I would have to say he is definitely closer to the other end of the spectrum.

Haha - yes, Grandfather is not exactly well-practiced in certain skills.

Or Frank is all like, "You have 500 rooms in this place, and you make me sleep OUTSIDE on a night like this? HELLS no!"

Cat -
Aye, poor Frank.

Yep, Peter is missing the unmistakable aura that makes people take note when he walks in a room.

Good recall on the eyes bit.

I think your analogy to the Lord of the Rings characters hits it exactly on the head. Well put.

Although I think Dill's only real similarity to Sam (as far as personality) is their willingness to put their own lives in danger for their friends, and their love of food. I can just imagine Dill on the road to Mordor:

"Dude, lemme see the ring! I wanna see it! Give it here!"

"Dude, why do we have to go to the volcano, man? It's soooo...faaaar...awaaaaaay..."

"Why does Gandolf get eagles to help HIM, but he can't get an eagle to drop the ring in the volcano? HUH? Stupid Gandolf..."

I can also imagine Gollum's reaction to Dill:

"Ohhhh, the nassssty hobbit has wet its pants again! Oh, it reeeeeeks, it reeeeks! Nassssty hobbit!"
