"Peter And The Substitute Teacher" Ch. 32 and 33

Chapter 32 - A Carpet Full Of Nightmares
Chapter 33 - Wading In

No, there's not a chapter missing. After some deliberation, I divided the former Chapter 29 into two chapters, 29 and 30. So 30 became 31, and here we are at 32 and 33.

Not being an expert herpetologist, I'm wondering if all those snakes are native to wherever Duskerville is. If they are, then perhaps the witch (and I'm wary of just assuming it's Enid) was controlling them, and if they weren't it's likely she was summoning them.

I also found it refreshing that Mr. Wainwright and the boys could see the snakes, rather than them thinking it's all in Gwen's head. That sort of thing happens far too often for my liking (though you DID do it well in Morgue). They seem like a really nice close-knit family, and you managed to give that impression during an action sequence! Colour me suitably impressed.

Gurgize = To attempt to say a word while burping, as in this famous line from Jane Austen: "BWAAAAA," Mr Darcy gurgized, looking as though he'd rather be somewhere else.

I was going to use water moccasins, too, but apparently they are located only in the American South, and I figure Duskerville is somewhere in the northeast, so...only copperheads and rattlers, which are more or less found throughout the eastern seaboard states.

Thanks for the kind words about the Wainwrights and the scene!

Most of those snakes aren't really much for climbing but if it's snake mind control I'll give you a break on that one... ;)

I guess she's not too soft, but stiiiiill. Also, I kind of love that you named one of her brothers Chasen, which means Hunter (which nerdy me says is derived from the French chasse, to hunt).

Bah. Chasser*. Stupid typos.

That's true, I hadn't really considered that rattlers aren't climbers...don't know about copperheads, so I trust you on that one. Sooooo...I'm definitely gonna go with the witch's summoning power over them.

That's funny about Chasen! I didn't even think about meanings - I have a cousin named Chasen, and I figured it was a good name for a hunter-y type guy!

It's Mary am having issues with g-mail signing me in.

Yay for getting to finally "see" Gwen's brothers.
And I'm liking her dad more and more. Would rather see he and Melissa together than she and Ranger Eric...

Having once come across a water moccasin as big around as my bicep and about 2-3' long. I am quite GLAD that you didn't include them in this story. (we had one in my parents backyard when I was a teen. I was getting ready to let the dogs out when I saw it slither under a barrel planter.
I grabbed the dogs and got my dad who used a hose to flush it out then killed it with a shovel. We didn't realize that it was a cotton mouth until it flared up at him.)
They're one of the few reasons that I hate living in Florida sometimes ;-)

Hey Mary,

Just wait till we see Dill's family! Although I didn't have as much need for them as I did Gwen's, so they'll be mostly in the background.

Yeah, water moccasin's are bad news. I saw one as a kid, resting under a dock on a lake - the dock had planks you walked on, then under that there was another kind of framework.

Anyway, the snake was curled up and sunning itself on the slats under the main planks. I found a stick and stuck it through the slats -

WHAM! It jolted out its hiding place and zipped out into the lake, fast as lightning.

I didn't go swimming for the rest of the week.

To All -

By the way, interesting factoid I came across while trying to research the habitats of rattlers.

Some woman gave a speech where she said something like 75% of bite victims of rattlesnakes were drunk and messing with the rattler.

There you go, kids. You can reduce your chances of snakebite by 75% by just not getting drunk and acting stupid.
