Ack! He slid down it the whole way? That's gonna sting. Then he started throwing rocks. He's a tough kid when he's got his back against the wall, that's for sure.
Typo: "he could get over the second batch of barb wire" - barbed wire.
Something I've been wondering: why are the crazies so keen to attack the kids but not each other? I know they're quite happy to trample other crazies, but that's because they see them as obstacles and don't care if they hurt each other, rather than actively trying to do harm. How do they differentiate? Is there some sort of "crazy pheremone" that takes them off the radar or something?!
And speaking of mystical stuff, I fear that relying on the Blessing too much may become a very bad habit...perhaps addressed in a future story (if not in the next chapter, judging by the cliffhanger)?
And, finally, they are SO NEARLY OUT. Hurrah!
Also, Darren, sorry to make your concern misplaced, but actually I've JUST arrived in Brisbane, rather than New Zealand (much as I'd like to go!). But thanks for the support!
Pallych = Welsh word for someone you meet who is your very best friend for that night while both of you are drunk, but whom you will only vaguely remember in the morning.
Um the Muse - Huh? Peter didn't slide down anything...huh? I gotta go back and read what I wrote again...
Cat - Thanks!
I think they're like a pack of hyenas: why do hyenas only attack other species and not each other?
I realize crazy sociopathic murderers are humans, too, but I think the ones at Shadow Hills who are inclined to attack are going to go after the small, the weak, and the outsiders.
Well, you know, outsiders to them.
Plus, I betcha the Curse has something to do with it.
Rubberduck - Yep! My go-to reason for all bad things that happen to Pete!
Very good point about the Blessing. I might stress it less during the rewrite.
And you'll be interested to know that in four more stories, I will directly address how Peter can't afford to depend on the Blessing to keep him safe anymore...
Yeah, I know: four more stories? That's like a year and a half away...
Unless book sales pick up about 20,000% and I can go to writing full time.
PETER AND THE VAMPIRES is a horror/comedy web novel (and a free podcast!)about a normal, 10-year-old kid who moves into a sinister town filled with supernatural horribleness. The series is composed of different "monster of the week" stories - kind of like THE X-FILES crossed with THE SIMPSONS (if Mr. Burns were a ghoul and something terrifying lived in the town dump). "Peter And The Dead Men" is the first story in the collection. A new page is posted every day.
