Ah, these would be the eponymous witches, then. Woo, never expected my course on Witchcraft and Demonology would become useful so quickly!

Unless, and this would be awesome, the substitutes are NOT the eponymous witches, but the Malleus (or perhaps what the Flannagan ancestors did with it) will be a theme throughout the next few stories, maybe having something to do with preventing the REAL witches coming back. 'Peter and the Witches' then being the last story in the book, where witches from five centuries ago are resurrected.

If this is just a single-story thing, though, then I'm guessing a Flannagan took the Malleus to heart and enthusiastically began persecuting witches, and that's why these current witches (descendants of the 16th century ones?) are angry. Though why Grandfather would be involved I'm not sure...maybe he has a special copy with Flannagan annotations on how to REALLY hunt witches? Perhaps these witches (if that's what they are) aren't nearly as powerful as the old ones and the Flannagan Malleus contains hints on how they might get more power. Interested to see what happens next!

Hey Rubberduck -
You took a class on witchcraft and demonology?! I might have to pick your brain sometime.

Interesting theories...that would have been pretty cool.

Unfortunately, I just used the Malleus as a kind of code word to let him know about Veloria...a code word that Seamus would know, but probably nobody else would.

But I really like your ideas. They might come in handy some day as part of another story...

PS - To all searching for anagrams, 'Veloria Valinda' doesn't spell out anything that I know of. I promise.
