“Guys, come on, we’ve got to make sure the back door’s locked!” Mom said frantically, and took off running for the kitchen.
Peter ran after her. As he passed the windows in the den, he stopped in his tracks so fast that Dill nearly ran into him.
Words written in flaky white paste smeared the windows, large letters scrawled in childish handwriting:
KILLER
DEAD MAN
FOOL
Peter walked up to the window and felt the glass over the letters. It was still smooth and untouched, which meant the white paste they had written with was on the outside.
Thank God.
“What does that mean?” Peter wondered aloud about the handwriting.
“I don’t know, but it looks like they don’t like you very much,” Dill said as he raced on by.
In the kitchen, Mom was jiggling the doorknob to the back door when they all heard the screen door outside it squeeeeeeeaaaak open. Mom cried out and backed away as a hail of eggs smashed against the glass part of the kitchen door.
“WHAT DO YOU WANT?” Mom screamed. “WHY WON’T YOU LEAVE US ALONE?”
In his terrifying encounters with monsters, Peter had always been scared – but now he felt a different kind of fear as he watched his mother fight back tears. He didn’t like to admit it, because adults often seemed mean and clueless, but he’d always believed that they understood the world and were totally in control. Grandfather certainly seemed to be. Mom might have lost her job back in
For the first time in his life, he was seeing his mother act just as scared as he felt. Totally helpless, and all because of a bunch of strange kids outside. Seeing her like this made him realize that maybe being a grownup didn’t mean you were really in control of the things around you, just that you faked it pretty well. And that was really scary, in a way that changed how he thought the world worked.
Then the new fear got replaced by a more familiar one, the old type that chilled him to the bone, as all the lights in the house suddenly shut off and plunged them into darkness. Only a pale glow from the moon outside shone through the windows.
Mom cried out again in surprise, but managed to get a hold of herself.
“Guys, are you okay?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Peter whispered.
“NO, this really SUCKS,” Dill said in a trembling voice.
Mom was about to say something, but stopped. Outside the house, childish voices called in the darkness.
“Meliiiiiisa, come out and play…”
“We won’t hurt you…much…”
“Meliiiiisa…don’t make us angry…”
Peter’s stomach turned flip-flops in his belly. “Mom, how do they know your name?”
“We’ve got to get flashlights,” Mom said, ignoring his question.

Oh poor Melisa, she is almost going to have a break down.
The good news is if they aren't human and she sees them. It can be blamed on stress so she will not have to be dragged into the world of Peter and Grandpa.
Just don't let her see the writing on the wall... I mean on the window.
Normal kids probably wouldn't remember to write all the letters backwards, so that Peter can read them.
Anyone want to bet that at least one of them is an illusionist? My money is on the fishbowl-head kid; based on Marvel comics, lol.
This one really is the creepiest/best. Perfect for Halloween!

Having Peter's mom involved in a scary situation for a change is kind of cool - up until now she's been kind of the representative of normality, oblivious to all the weird stuff...
And yet, if she grew up there, as part of the apparently cursed family, she must have experienced some of it when she was a kid! Makes you wonder if maybe she just blocked it out of her mind when she grew up and moved away, and now it's all coming back...
Maybe this happened before when she was growing up. They know her name and all. We only know that she wasn't allowed in the garden as a kid, not much else from her childhood (which I would be interested in learning more about (: ).
I bet she didn't block it out, but just kind of wrote it off as being a kid and her wild imagination. After all, why would she think Peter was lying about all the stuff that was happening if she had experienced it before?
Chibi bad guys!!!
I know its supposed to be creepy.. but now i cant be really scared with the image of chibi bad guys... and then a chibi godzilla/swamp monster shows up and chomps them down!
Go Chibi Swamp Monster!
sorry i know completely off topic but i had to share heheh
I'm loving that everybody's creeped out! And it's even better that the story is inspiring new posters to voice their comments. Thanks guys, I always enjoy hearing from everyone!

Too late about the writing on the window. And nice catch about the letters on the windows having to be backwards- I didn't even think of that!
Even nicer catch about Fishbowl. Yup, he's basically modeled after Mysterio, one of Spiderman's villains. Well, modeled after the fishbowl part of the costume. I can assure you he's not an illusionist, though.

Glad you like that! Yes, in future stories (WAY future ones, like, years away) Mom WILL have to confront the supernatural nastiness that Duskerville inspires. However, and I think I've only alluded to it in MANNEQUINS - maybe in VAMPIRES, too - but this much weird stuff has NEVER happened all at once in such a short time frame before. So in all likelihood, Mom never came across even 1% of the creepiness that Peter has experienced. Well...maybe more than 1%. We'll see by the end of the story...

Excellent points. By the time PSYCHOS ends, we'll see a bit more of what you're talking about...and see that Mom has sometimes been ENCOURAGED to write things off as coincidence...

Are they creepier now, what with the knives and meat cleavers? Maybe they're chibi knives...
