Actually, what the barker said about the freak show has some truth to it in other cases, too...
When I went to see the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow a number of years ago, they had as a special guest an older lady who'd been in some of the old-time carnival freakshows. She was a midget and had been exhibited as "the living doll" or something like that.
One of the most interesting things she said was that while some of the freak shows may have been abusive, many were not, and that for a lot of the people in them, it was the only good way to make a living, and have a circle of friends where you were accepted. So closing them down in the name of protecting the "freaks" from exploitation had actually meant that they lost their community, their livelihood and their chosen "family". Many of them had no other place to go, so it was really devastating for them.
I guess that's what happens when you decide to rescue people without asking them whether they actually want rescuing.
PETER AND THE VAMPIRES is a horror/comedy web novel (and a free podcast!)about a normal, 10-year-old kid who moves into a sinister town filled with supernatural horribleness. The series is composed of different "monster of the week" stories - kind of like THE X-FILES crossed with THE SIMPSONS (if Mr. Burns were a ghoul and something terrifying lived in the town dump). "Peter And The Dead Men" is the first story in the collection. A new page is posted every day.

True.
Of course, it COULD just be a public relations spin job and a cover for nasty evilness...

Excellent points. That's pretty fascinating about the former member of the troupe.
