I'm never completely clear whether we're supposed to like Melissa. I also feel like a Grinch for saying so.

Todd -
Unfortunately she suffers from "Buffy's Mom" syndrome. She perpetually appears clueless because she doesn't know what's really going on...so we get mad at her when she's unfair to Peter. And she's one of the least-developed characters in the story.

On the other hand, I feel like she's also one of the most realistic. She gets mad at her kids, she's not a perfect parent, she's still a little girl in a lot of ways when dealing with her cold and distant father, she's only just barely in control of her life, she gets upset at stuff, sometimes she's in a good mood, sometimes she's not. But she loves her children and she's basically a good person.

Naaah, don't feel like a Grinch. I like her, but that's partially because I know what she's going to do in the future...

That wrong link of mine - weird!
I copied/pasted the earthquake map link from my browser; I have no idea how it could have changed.
I'll try again and leave it naked this time.

Looking forward to more courtroom scenes.

Awww. -I- like Melissa. This line got to me:

“I’m a good mother,” Melissa whispered.

Brings home how she's feeling about all this, and about knowing nothing about what her son's doing. And, yikes, Grandfather just shut her down with a steel cage of grouchiness.

Nonsesc = Something inexplicable that quickly becomes unintelldfigss.

Well Melissa is one of the few people in Peter's life who hasn't had any strange happen to them yet. I can see where she is coming from most of the time, other times she needs to calm down. Hard to do though when your kid is in trouble though.

Seamus did have a really low blow there, sadly one of the few ways to keep Melissa from yelling to much.

Thanks, Darren. Early on, I thought Melissa was the most realistic character and really likable, but she so frequently and reflexively sides against her own son, I wish she would demonstrate what a good mother she is rather than just say so, more to convince herself than anyone else.

I realize this sort of story would never work with a mother who was actively involved all the time. Anyway, as always, I really appreciate the insight.

The most damning observation on Melissa as a mother is that she has permitted Beth's character to develop as it has.

Okay, it worked this time!

Awwwww...I'm glad you like Melissa. She needs some supporters.

Yeah, GF is pretty dang cold sometimes. Not a people person.

Ahhh-ah-aaaahhh...we know there have been SOME weird things, like the psycho trick-or-treaters when she was a kid...

Todd -
Cool. Yes, she does side against her son a lot, but I think that will evolve over the next couple of stories.

WHOA NOW!

Haha, here's the thing: Beth is actually based on my real-life sister Beth, who was a HELLION as a baby and toddler (up till about 6, I believe). I was quite docile, like Peter, so I don't think you can make a fair judgment on Melissa just based on Beth. Sometimes you get a crazy kid who can just barely be controlled.
