I'm quite surprised how physical that encounter turned out. I expected more of a mental/spiritual attack. Not that this would have been preferable for Mike.
Then again this description leaves a lot more options for getting rid of it. After all it isn't really incorporal.

Certainly hope Scott doesnt get accused of this (even though its his fault, technically).

Like to point out that the description of the shadow man is like what happens in Princess Mononoke when the Bore was infected with the demon.

Well the described action of entering the body is a relatively common method of possession in movies.
After all this is the most obvious method to enter a living body.
Depending on what the entity needs to do and is "physically" able, the method varies in fiction.
But since these things sort of by definition defy physics in some ways it is often difficult to guess which rules they are supposed to follow and why they would choose a specific course of action.
For example this Boogeyman could just as well have simply enveloped Mike and suffocated/drowned him (this would not contradict anything in this story).
He could have used some previously unused ability as well instead of being relatively similar to an animated liquid with great physical strength against solid objects. For example it could have taken control of his perceptions, feelings as long as it was in physical contact. Or touching its victim slowly and painfully drains its live.

Rubberduck -
True dat.

Eldoran -
Yep, it's not exactly invulnerable.

Kelly -
Huh...I haven't seen it...

Eldoran -
True, he definitely could have enveloped him. I might use that...
