Whoah -- the screaming kidnap victim is suddenly female? Even though it's Dill screaming? I'm not sure I like the gendered imagery creeping in here ... very surprising, actually.

????????????????????????

What, is it so strange to compare high-pitched, muffled screaming to a woman with a gag in her mouth?

And if there's a more socially acceptable reason in a children's book for a woman to have a gag in her mouth, let me know.

Now, first off, I hadn't even noticed the switched gender. With that said, we all know that there are plenty of kidnapped kids of both genders in the world, ie there's no real reason for the stereotype. Also, the description turns out to be true--Dill really is a kidnap victim (and, I assume, he really was gagged somehow).
Anyhow, that's my two cents; I don't really feel strongly about it, one way or t'other.
You know what would be funny? If the "jail" had a way out already. Since the Snow Demon was distracted I could see it happening. Now that would be embarrassing!

I would expect a child's scream to sound more like a female kidnap victim than a male kidnap victim.

Good that it wasn't that noticeable...but I'm going with Todd on this one.

Ditto.

However, since it seems that description is a little jarring for some, I'll probably change it in the 'publication' draft.

like a ready teapot? instead of using any human analogy? It dodn't offend me either and OY am a woman, I was actually more offended by the hoity-toity reprimand but that's just me.
