I think the hammer was a good idea, it usually works quite well in movies, but there is one major disadvantage, it is a relatively fragile solution, so a coordinated attempt of both Jon and Chubbs or more attempts of one of them should break either the handle of the door or the hammer (leverage and inertia work for them unfortunately). Besides they should have increased strength or is Chubbs demonstrated strength not related to being a werewolf? And it seems only a matter of time until they decide to turn into a wolf.
Anyway now that Peter and Dill have stalled their pursuers, they can plan and prepare for their escape. I believe grandfather hung up the phone because he went to help them, so they would only need to stall the werewolves long enough.
Not necessarily. The hammers that I use at work are steel through and through (I think they have better balance, my coworkers think I'm nuts).
But on the bright side, Jo and Chubbs still aren't in wolf form. I'd be looking for another window or something. Unfortunately they need to act fast. Dorms usually have more than one stairwell, especially for fire safety purposes. Jon could be looking for that right now.
Well even steel handles aren't impossible to bend or break, just as the door handles and there is the possibility for the hammer to slip out. Its a great idea to stall a pursuer, but it would probably only stall them for less than a minute, if they are determined to break through. And time seems to be of the essence here. There is always the possibility for Jon and Chubbs to transform and Kyle will wake up soon too (werewolves have super healing). On the other hand that gives Peter and Dill the chance to barricade themselves in, flee out of the building or create a trap for their pursuers.
By the way Todd, I didn't own a cell phone until 3 months ago.
Well so far Peter and Dill can stay one step ahead but that doesn't seem to be working very well.
Oh course super smell can be used against someone as well, with Dill near by just get him to throw is dirty underwear at them. They will run the other way.
I'm still rooting for my conspiracy theory: Jon and Chubbs are going to turn on Kyle. Peter and Dill will make their escape in the confusion and Charlie will come back to life, become the alpha male and ride off into the sunset. On Jon and Chubbs's shoulders, of course.
PETER AND THE VAMPIRES is a horror/comedy web novel (and a free podcast!)about a normal, 10-year-old kid who moves into a sinister town filled with supernatural horribleness. The series is composed of different "monster of the week" stories - kind of like THE X-FILES crossed with THE SIMPSONS (if Mr. Burns were a ghoul and something terrifying lived in the town dump). "Peter And The Dead Men" is the first story in the collection. A new page is posted every day.

How do Jon and Chubbs know Peter and Dill don't have a cell phone?

Todd -
Good point. I'll have to address THAT, now!
Eldoran -
Remember, neither of them is in wolf form. So they're just regular dudes, no special strength at this point.
Just to be clear, I'll make it a steel-handled hammer.

Woooooo! Watch out for Rai!
Hmmmm...
In the interest of full disclosure, I didn't have a cellular phone until three or four years ago. But I wouldn't tell Jon and Chubbs that!

Trust me, it's hard to break down a door. Until they go wolfy, Jon & Chubbs have no advantages over anybody else in the strength department.

Haha! Dill should pull the anti-changeling defense!
Um the Muse -
Hmmmm...

Hey Martin! Welcome!
Well, that's a very good point...but you haven't smelled Dill's underpants.
It's man-made (boy-made?), and it's HORRIBLE.
